We've been a little quiet this last year for a variety of reasons but we couldn't resist snapping up a date with the lovely Jon Wilks when we heard that he was going to be in the area.
Jon is a well respected music writer who often writes about folk music - brilliantly - and performs it brilliantly too. His live shows are an amusing mix of folk song performance and conversation, throwing in tidbits of weird and wonderful information about the original singers and collectors that he has come across during his writing research. With MC Martin Simpson in attendance for this evening, we're wondering if there might be any exclusive Simpson stories that Jon can share with us tonight, but whether he does or not, this will be a great evening of lovely guitar playing and great songs.
Jon's most recent album is 'Midlife', a collection of traditional and music hall songs and tunes from around Birmingham and the wider Midlands. "As someone who came of age in Birmingham in the mid-90s and only came to traditional folk music later on, I wanted to filter these songs through my own experience.... I can't divorce my interest in researching and writing about traditional music from the need to sing the songs. I know the areas that the songs come from, so to study their origins and the singers who sang them originally brings vivid life to them in my head as I perform them. One of the things I love so dearly about singing traditional songs is that you're breathing new life into them and sending them forth for someone else to discover...".
We're really delighted that Jon is coming to Sheffield as part of his March 2020 tour, it will be a fascinating evening, with songs and stories from Jon along with one or two contributions from our Bright Phoebus MC for the evening, the inimitable, Martin Simpson.
"Jon Wilks is a fine guitar player, a great singer and has amassed a considerable and unique collection of hitherto unknown material from around his hometown of Birmingham. I'm looking forward to sharing the stage with him immensely!" - Martin Simpson
What's the betting that they might do something unique together on the night?!
