Mohamed Errebbaa & Tagna Groove in Sheffield

Mohamed Errebbaa & Tagna Groove
Sheffield University, Sheffield
Friday 4th October 2024

Moroccan music merging traditional Gnawa with contemporary afro funk and jazz fusion grooves.

Moroccan musician Mohamed Errebbaa is a highly regarded performer of the Gnawa tradition and master of the bass lute called the Gimbri. Mohamed now leads Tagna Groove, a six piece group of jazz, soul & Afro-funk musicians presenting Gnawa music in a contemporary international context. Their show of Gnawa music with hypnotic, bass-heavy dance grooves, Afro-jazz brass & soulful vocals draw on the deep trance power of the Gnawa repertoire, an ancient tradition of religious observation through ritual poetry, dance and rhythmic music. Talking Gigs is excited to work with Mohamed where a first half of musically illustrated interview is followed by a full performance. This engaging format provides the chance for visiting artists to tell their story about their music and practice.
